How To Build a Better CV

Use the following headings and information to build a CV that contains all the necessary information required by today's employers. A CV can be one page, the standard is two but for complex or lengthy careers it may well be longer.

Profile

A snappy synopsis highlighting your key skills and aims, make the reviewer want to read more. About 5 sentences… it’s a summary!
 
Professional Experience

For each position give the following information, starting with the most recent and working backwards. Headings for each position should include dates (from - to including months) company name and job title. Repeat for each position held.

Copy for each position should include a brief outline of what the company does and the size of company
 
Provide a list of the key achievements you have made in your job

  • Show evidence such as percentage increases or financial figures
  • Avoid cliché phrases that don’t differentiate you
  • Always tailor your CV for each job application
  • Avoid abbreviations that may not be known to your potential employers
  • Make sure you account for any gaps on your experience
  • If you have a vast amount of experience it is important to highlight relevant and most recent experience rather than making the CV too long

For a sales CV it is also useful to include:

Education

This should contain the following information: years and school name, exams passed, years and university, degree passed with grade, professional qualifications, professional associations of which you are a member and training courses with dates

Key Skills

  • Spoken fluent languages
  • Computer literacy

Interests

Outside interests show employers what motivates you, what personal skills you may have and how you will integrate into the team. Job adverts stipulate certain personality traits required for positions. Identify what they are and show how your hobbies can relate to their requirements e.g. team sports
