A recent study conducted by My CV and Me, a London-based CV writing and career coaching company, has revealed that, out of the 100 job seekers surveyed, 30% (1 in 3) are using social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin to find jobs. While Linkedin, the only professional social networking site, is the favourite of those surveyed, a large percentage turn to Facebook followed by Twitter. "Some of the big recruiters have started posting groups on social networks to make it easier for job seekers to get in touch and find out about their organisations, which can be an excellent opportunity to network." said Nikki, Founder of My CV and Me.
“If you fan a company on Facebook or follow recruiters on Twitter, you might be the first to find out about job openings. Job seekers can also use alert services such as TweetMyJobs, which send out automatic updates of new openings in a specific field and region to your phone." Nikki added. The survey, conducted through My CV and Me’s website (http://www.mycvandme.co.uk) and over the telephone, also found that 40% of job seekers use personal contacts and networking to find a job. "With employees earning money for referring candidates to their place of work, this high percentage makes sense" said Nikki. Social networking and job boards come second with 30%, followed by recruitment agencies with 12%, newspaper adverts with 5%, career fairs with 4%, trade journals with 3%, blogs with 3%, online CV database bases with 2% and finally Jobcentres and speculative applications sharing only 1%.
Based on the survey, job seekers should make it as easy as possible for employers to find them. Therefore social networks with millions of users play a large part in increasing personal networks and therefore chances of finding a job.
